Watching my way through this at the moment. Reminds me a lot, for many obvious reasons (many of the same creators), of Batman: The Animated Series. Particularly because they've gone for the sort of 1940s-style setting that the animated series had. I'm a big fan of that, feels like that era and that aesthetic is a natural fit for Batman.

I like that it's kind of a reboot or reimagining that attempting to fit into any existing canon too. Every villain so far has been a reinvention, and also in a more low-key, normal, kind of way, albeit with some choice over the top comic book twists
Spoiler
(the Penguin has an artillery piece on her boat, Catwoman just happens to have a panther handy, Clayface and Batman get into a swordfight for a moment)
Whisper it so it doesn't jinx it, but somebody at Amazon knows what they are doing. The Boys, Invincible, now this. It's a pretty good roster.

Watched all 10 episodes now, and I heartily approve. Yes, at first it's a little disconcerting making Commissioner and Barbara Gordon Black (even though Babs still has red hair), Alfred an endomorph instead of the traditional ectomorph, and Detective Montoya a little chunkier, as well as the heavy hinting about which way the female characters swing, but if that's the price of making good drama these days, so be it. The writing itself doesn't engage in silly, drama stifling, modern tropes. Actually, including a number of black characters is good for the series IMO. Turning Babs into a public defender makes it hard to see how she might eventually become Batgirl, but they may be planning a plot twist for a later season, or, since they made the character older, they may just be ignoring that.

As for our community's particular predilections, there are a few chase/fight scenes with Catwoman including a takedown with bolas around her ankles. As for the rest, I say, just enjoy the show. The supporting characters seem to have more depth than usual, and I like that. Even Bruce Wayne comes in for a little more depth than usually depicted.

I did like Batgirl posing somewhat like a bondage model for the cops when they caught her after she'd been wrapped up by the bolas.

The changes I think are necessary to make interesting stories. If everybody knows X, Y and Z about a character it's limiting, so change a few things around and see what happens.

I was reading that apparently the stocky Alfred is his original shape from the comics, but it was changed after the first TV adaptation. Also he may have had a different name I forget.

I thought the change with Harley was cool too. Especially as there doesn't seem to be a Joker yet? I haven't seen all of it. If they can do the whole season without even dropping in their ultimate A-lister that would be impressive.

The change to Harley, that she's basically to social justice what Poison Ivy is to environmentalism is fascinating, and gives her a much more interesting superobjective versus her other incarnations. If makes her and Ivy make more sense together. Also doing away with the whole pale skin because chemical bath thing was a good idea, it was a shit origin.
